Sarah
Nona's grey cardigan led her to begin enjoying Jane Austen. Franklin is cataloguing his stash -- of books. Norah has been writing, and writing about, haiku, senryu, and tanka. And then, of course, there was the plethora of poetry on the interwebs for the February 2 Blogger's Silent Poetry Reading, all while I've been trying to organize both my yarn stash and bookshelves. (There may be something to this "nesting" thing.)
Yarn. Books. Yarn. Books. More yarn. More books -- crammed so tight on one shelf it was bursting at the seams. ("Oh, yeah," Jason said to me when I mentioned this, "I think maybe I was supposed to nail something to something to keep that from happening." Thanks, honey.) More yarn -- in closets, in decorative displays, crammed into boxes.
So that's where I am today: I have two extensive collections, one of yarn, one of books. They are collections based on years of individual choices. I want to know if they overlap in some way, or if by examining both I might find some interesting juxtapositions. What are the classics to which I continue to return, and what do they say about me? Finding out sounds like a fun project. I'm going to look at both my books and my yarn, and see what connections I can make between the two. Here's what I might look into, to see what patterns emerge:
- What do I have on my bookshelves and in my yarn stash which embarrasses me?
- What books and projects do I feel guilty about not reading/finishing?
- Do I keep my books and my yarn in pretty good condition?
- Do I have a "system" for organization?
- What have I considered important enough to commit to memory?
It's a pretty open-ended project, so if anyone wants to join me, you are welcome to do so -- leave a comment or e-mail me, and I'll add your name and a link to your blog to the list. I may even offer some sort of prize drawing at some point, just to spice things up. Want a button?
Edited to add: Read Your Stash prizes were given out on Monday, April 9.

Count me in - I'm in the middle of moving, so I've been taking a good long list at what each of these extensive collections mean to me!

If you check....We have some issues with the weight of books in the house (1000 cookbooks and counting, this does not include the history collection, the sci-fi collection and on and on) and I have decided to dedicate myself to finishing all (?) the books on my "going to read this someday" shelf. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll be back.

Oooh this sounds like fun!
I will attempt to get organized enough to join. I love books and yarn - like most people I encounter on knitting blogs. :-D

I'm interested. I'm just beginning a "de-cluttering process" to manage stuff, and I like the idea of interviewing each area to see why it is like it is.
With books, my collection belongs to four people in the family. Yarn is primarily mine. I'm generally a one-project-at-a-time girl, so my yarn stash is relatively tame. I do have a weakness for great sock yarn.
BUT. But I seem to have a thing for shrunken sweaters. The bin is overflowing-- I use the stuff as fabric for treasure bags and gift items. And I frogged a rug my mother crocheted from Woolrich blanket "noodles," ie the wool selvedge edges, to weave into something someday. And I keep some kids' clothes to recycle into drawstring bags and bean bags and birthday gifts. And my collection of felting wool and roving seems ungainly-- I use it, but it's seasonal. I like looms for myself and my children.
Too many potential projects from "free stuff," basically. I like the idea of reading the collection to see what it is.

I am spring cleaning here. I would love to join up with you. I have a lot of embarrassing yarn from when I first started knitting. do I have to list that?
Books I dont have so many of anymore. To small of a house but I still have to many!
